AP Lang score calculator

AP English Language and Composition. Your weighted exam percentage and the 2026 distribution, without a guessed 1 to 5.

Free response is entered as a percentage because College Board does not publish a points total for it. Use the scoring guidelines for a released exam if you have one.

Example scores are filled in. Type over them with your own.

Weighted exam percentage Example

 ·

This is not an AP score. College Board publishes no rule connecting a percentage to a 1 through 5, and it moves the boundaries every year so that a 3 keeps the same meaning. This tool will not guess one. Why that is

Section weights and distributions are College Board's own published figures.

Free response
3 q / 135 min / 55%

Fully digital exam taken in the Bluebook testing app, with all responses submitted at the end. Total exam duration is 3 hours 15 minutes. The 2 hour 15 minute free-response section includes a 15-minute reading period. The multiple-choice section is split into 23 to 25 reading questions and 20 to 22 writing questions. No calculator is used. The three free-response questions are synthesis, rhetorical analysis, and argument.

Why there is no cut point on this page

You will find charts elsewhere claiming that some percentage earns a 5 on AP Lang. College Board publishes no such figure, for this subject or any other, for any current exam year.

It also moves the boundaries deliberately. The stated aim is that a 3 represents the same level of achievement year to year, so when an exam runs harder the composite required drops to compensate. A cut point from a released exam therefore does not transfer to the exam you sat, even in the same subject.

What you can do is compute your weighted percentage, which the calculator above does from College Board's own section weights, and read it against the published distribution. The longer explanation is here.

Two different vintages on this page

The format above is what College Board publishes now, describing the May 2027 administration. The distribution is from May 2026. AP exams have been moving into the Bluebook app, so the two do not necessarily describe the identical test. Both dates are shown rather than merged into one claim.

Common questions

What percentage do you need for a 5 on AP Lang?
There is no published answer. College Board does not release composite cut points for any current AP exam, and it moves the boundaries each year so that a given score keeps its meaning. Any specific percentage you see quoted is from an old released form or is a guess.
How is AP Lang structured?
Two sections: 45 multiple-choice questions in 60 minutes for 45% of the score, and 3 free-response questions in 135 minutes for 55%.
What percentage of students pass AP Lang?
In 2026, 73% earned a 3 or higher: 16% got a 5, 26% a 4 and 31% a 3. Whether a 3 earns credit is decided by each college, not by College Board.
Is this an official College Board tool?
No. This site is not affiliated with the College Board. It uses College Board's published section weights and score distributions, with every source linked.
