Superscore

 ·

Whether a college accepts a superscore is that college's policy, not College Board's. Check each one before you rely on this number.

What a superscore is, precisely

It is your best Reading and Writing section score and your best Math section score, added together, even when they came from different test dates. It is not a question-by-question best, and it is not an average.

A student who scored 640 Reading and Writing with 600 Math in March, then 590 with 690 in May, has a superscore of 1330. Their best single sitting was 1280. The superscore is 50 points higher, and that gap is the entire reason the concept matters.

Whether it counts is the college's decision

This is the part that gets misunderstood. College Board will show you a superscore, but it does not decide what an admissions office does with it. Policies fall into three broad groups:

  • Colleges that superscore, and consider only your best sections.
  • Colleges that take your highest single sitting and ignore combinations.
  • Colleges that require every score you have ever earned.

There is no shortcut here: check each college on your list, on its own admissions site, for the cycle you are applying in. Policies change. The longer explanation is here, and Score Choice is a separate thing that is easy to confuse with this one.

Planning a retake around it

Because sections are combined independently, a retake only needs to beat one of your existing section scores to be worth something. If your Math is already where you want it, the entire value of another sitting sits in Reading and Writing.

To work out what a target section score would take in raw terms, the score needed calculator works backwards from a total, and the practice test calculator converts a practice attempt using that test's official table.

Common questions

What is an SAT superscore?
Your highest Reading and Writing section score and your highest Math section score, taken from different test dates and added together. It is built from whole section scores, never from individual modules or questions.
Does College Board calculate a superscore for me?
College Board does display a superscore in your score portal, but whether a college uses it is that college's own admissions policy. Some superscore, some take your highest single sitting, and some ask for every score you have.
Is my data sent anywhere?
No. Sittings are stored in your browser's local storage on this device only. There is no account, no email field, and nothing is transmitted. Clearing your browser data removes them.
Can I superscore across the digital and paper SAT?
Scores from the current digital SAT are on the same 400 to 1600 scale as the older paper SAT, and colleges generally treat them as comparable. Confirm with the specific college, since some have their own rules about how far back they will look.
Does superscoring work the same way on the ACT?
ACT offers official superscores too, but since 2025 the composite is the average of English, Math and Reading only, with science excluded. That changes what an ACT superscore is built from.
