The National Merit Selection Index, how it works

The National Merit Selection Index is (2 x Reading and Writing + Math) divided by 10. It runs from 48 to 228, it is always a whole number, and it exists only on the PSAT/NMSQT. It is not a percentile, not a scaled score, and not something you can compute from an SAT.
The doubling of Reading and Writing is the part that surprises people. Your verbal section counts twice toward this index and your math section counts once, which makes the Selection Index weight your performance differently from your PSAT total score.
The formula, worked
Take College Board’s own example. A student scores 620 on Reading and Writing and 500 on Math.

That student’s total PSAT score is 1120. Their Selection Index is 174. Those two numbers describe the same sitting and are not interchangeable.
Now flip the sections. A student with 500 Reading and Writing and 620 Math has the same 1120 total, but their index is (1000 + 620) / 10, which is 162. Twelve points of index separate two identical totals. That is the whole point of the weighting.

Why the range is 48 to 228
PSAT/NMSQT section scores run from 160 to 760 each, giving a total scale of 320-1520. Push those endpoints through the formula.
At the floor: (2 x 160 + 160) / 10 = 480 / 10 = 48.
At the ceiling: (2 x 760 + 760) / 10 = 2280 / 10 = 228.
So 48 and 228 are not arbitrary bounds. They fall straight out of the section scale. A student who answers nothing correctly still receives an index of 48, because the section scale itself has a floor.
Why it is always an integer
Section scores on the PSAT/NMSQT move in 10-point steps. There is no such thing as a 623 Reading and Writing score.
Because both section scores are multiples of 10, doubling one and adding the other still gives a multiple of 10. Dividing a multiple of 10 by 10 gives a whole number, every time.
This is a useful sanity check. If any calculator hands you a Selection Index of 174.5, either it accepted a section score that cannot exist or it is doing something other than the published formula.
It exists only on the PSAT/NMSQT
The Selection Index is a National Merit Scholarship Corporation construct, and NMSC uses the PSAT/NMSQT as its qualifying test. That is the only test in the suite where the index means anything for scholarship purposes.

The PSAT 10 is the same test shape on the same scale, taken in the spring, and it is not a qualifying test. Sophomores who sit the PSAT/NMSQT are usually taking it for practice, since NMSC’s competition runs on the junior-year administration.

The cutoff situation, stated honestly
Here is the part that most pages handle badly.
NMSC does not publish state Semifinalist cutoffs. It does not publish them in advance, and it does not publish a table afterwards. Students find out their status by notification, not by looking up a number.
Every cutoff figure you have seen online traces back to compilation, not publication. The most careful of these is Compass Education Group’s, which is built from crowd-sourced student reports and school reports. It is genuinely useful work. It is not an official source.
For the class of 2026, the last fully confirmed year, the compiled figures put the Commended cutoff at 210 nationally, with state Semifinalist cutoffs ranging from 210 to 225. Those figures are compiled by Compass Education Group from student-reported data; NMSC does not publish state cutoffs.
The class of 2027 was still settling as of late August 2026. Treat any class-of-2027 number you encounter as provisional.
How to use compiled cutoffs without misusing them
The spread matters more than any single number. A Selection Index that clears the bar comfortably in one state can miss it in another, because Semifinalist allocation is done by state. A 214 is a different proposition in a low-cutoff state than in a high-cutoff one.
The compiled figures also lag. They describe what a previous cohort produced, not what yours will. Cohort size, test difficulty and the equating of that year’s forms all move the line.
So the honest use of compiled cutoff data is as a range, with the state you test in attached, and with an explicit acknowledgement that it is student-reported. The dishonest use is quoting a single number as if NMSC had printed it.
What the Selection Index does not tell you
It is not a percentile. A 174 does not mean the 74th percentile of anything. For percentile information, the score report and SAT percentiles explained are the right references, and note that percentile systems differ from each other too.
It is not a predicted SAT score. The weighting is different and the scale is different. If you want an SAT projection, work from the section scores themselves.
It is not a college admissions input. Colleges see SAT or ACT scores, not Selection Indices. National Merit standing can appear on an application as an honor, but the index number itself is machinery internal to the scholarship competition.
Checking your own index
Read the two section scores off your PSAT/NMSQT report. Double the Reading and Writing number, add the Math number, divide by 10. That is the whole calculation, and it takes longer to read this sentence than to do it.
