What the SAT Math section actually tests

The SAT Math section is 44 questions in two separately timed 35-minute modules, and 70 percent of the scored questions are about equations: linear ones in the Algebra domain and nonlinear ones in the Advanced Math domain. Geometry and statistics split the remaining 30 percent evenly. Three quarters of the questions are four-option multiple choice and one quarter are student-produced response, where you type your own answer with no options to work backwards from.

A calculator is allowed on every question, and a formula reference sheet is available throughout.

The 4 questions that do not count are embedded pretest items, 2 per module, placed at differing points in the sequence and indistinguishable from scored questions. Math is adaptive within itself. Module 1 mixes easy, medium, and hard questions; your performance on it determines whether module 2 is targeted at higher or lower average difficulty. Reading and Writing routes separately and has no effect on your Math module. You can move freely inside a module but cannot return to module 1 after advancing. All four domains appear in both modules. Across each module, questions are arranged from easiest to hardest, so difficulty climbs steadily rather than resetting the way it does in Reading and Writing.

Algebra, 35 percent

Linear equations in one variable, linear equations in two variables, linear functions, systems of two linear equations in two variables, and linear inequalities in one or two variables.

This is the highest-yield content on the test. Thirteen to fifteen scored questions per form come from five closely related skills, all of them about straight lines and their algebra. A student who is genuinely fluent with slope, intercepts, and solving systems has secured more than a third of the section.

Advanced Math, 35 percent

Equivalent expressions, nonlinear equations in one variable and systems of equations in two variables, and nonlinear functions.

The Framework lists the equation types explicitly: absolute value, quadratic, exponential, polynomial, rational, and radical. Quadratics carry the most weight in practice, and the questions frequently test whether you can move between the standard, factored, and vertex forms of the same parabola and read a different feature off each one.

Problem-Solving and Data Analysis, 15 percent

Ratios, rates, proportional relationships and units; percentages; one-variable data including measures of center and spread; two-variable data, models and scatterplots; probability and conditional probability; inference from sample statistics and margin of error; and evaluating statistical claims from observational studies and experiments.

That is a long list for 5 to 7 questions, which means each testing point appears rarely. The reliable ones are percentages and unit conversion. The study-design and margin-of-error items ask you to reason about what a sample permits you to conclude, not to compute anything.

Geometry and Trigonometry, 15 percent

Area and volume; lines, angles, and triangles; right triangles and trigonometry; and circles.

Also 5 to 7 questions. Circle equations in the xy-plane and right-triangle trigonometry are the two areas most likely to appear, and the reference sheet does not include the trigonometric ratios.

Student-produced response questions

Between 8 and 12 scored questions per form require you to type an answer rather than select one. Answers can be positive or negative, integers, decimals, or fractions, and where a question has more than one valid answer you enter only one of them.

These questions matter out of proportion to their count, for one reason: none of the usual multiple-choice tactics work. You cannot plug the options back in, you cannot eliminate, and you cannot recognize a correct form. Whatever you produce has to be right on its own terms. Desmos and the reference sheet

Bluebook includes a built-in version of the Desmos Graphing Calculator, usable on the entire Math section. You may instead bring your own approved calculator. Under the old paper SAT, the Math section was split into a no-calculator portion and a calculator-allowed portion. That split is gone.

Desmos changes what certain questions cost you. Systems of equations can be solved by graphing both lines and reading the intersection. A quadratic’s roots can be read off the curve. A question asking where two functions are equal becomes a graphing task rather than an algebraic one.

The limit is setup time. Typing a messy expression into Desmos takes longer than solving a simple linear equation by hand, so the tool pays off on nonlinear and multi-step problems and costs you time on straightforward ones.

The reference sheet holds common formulas: areas and circumferences, volumes, the Pythagorean theorem, special right triangles, and the number of degrees and radians in a circle. It does not hold slope, the quadratic formula, sine, cosine, tangent, exponent rules, or anything about statistics.

Questions in context

Approximately 30 percent of scored Math questions are set in a context, which is 10 to 14 items per form. Contexts are drawn from science, social studies, and real-world topics, and the Framework notes that a majority of in-context questions run to 50 words or fewer.

That word limit is the useful detail. These are not long word problems. They are short scenarios wrapped around ordinary algebra, and the translation from words to equation is usually one or two steps. The frequent error is misassigning what a variable represents, not failing to solve.

Where a Math score sits

College Board sets the College and Career Readiness Benchmark for Math at 530, which it says predicts “a 75% likelihood of achieving a C or higher in related first semester, credit-bearing college courses.”

For the class of 2025, the most recent cohort in the SAT Suite Annual Report, the mean Math score was 508 with a standard deviation of 126, and 41 percent of the 2,004,965 test takers met the Math benchmark. Math benchmark attainment runs well below the 64 percent who met the Reading and Writing benchmark.

How many questions are in the SAT Math section?
